Title:Tribal Tradition The women of the Padaung Tribe, now found in northern Thailand, are famous for an unusual adornment. They employ brass rings to create the visual illusion of longer, stretched necks. While the necks of the Padaung women do not actually grow longer, the weight of the rings pushes their shoulders down, thereby creating the illusion. For the Padaung, who were once persecuted in their country of origin, Burma (Myanmar), this adornment is a defining characteristic of their culture and despite the pain and deformation caused by the rings, it is considered to be an essential element of beauty. This tradition has been a symbol of their society. I was privileged to spend time with this wonderful woman and her child. I wanted to share this moment by presenting this photo to the world in her honor.
