Title:Jerusalm 2 I photographed these images whilst staying at the nun’s convent in the tiny town of Jerusalem on the Whanganui River in New Zealand, it was a beautiful but desolate location. The convent was established by an amazing French nun named Mother Mary Aubert. She arrived there in 1883 as a Maori interpreter and cultural adviser. She and 2 other sisters taught at the small school, cleared the land for farming and orchards; made and marketed medicine; and raised homeless children – as a result, the community thrived. When recently visiting this virtually uninhabited convent I wanted to convey an idea of simple beauty and a feeling of time standing still..the remnants of the work of a very courageous and much revered woman. This place is now mainly used as a retreat.
