Title:Timelessness While on assignment shooting video of a powwow for a newspaper in Northern Utah, I had asked a participant of the powwow for an interview. As with many of these inner-suburb powwows, this one was held under the sodium vapor lights of a high school gymnasium, and although the the colors of the outfits and facepaint were phenomenally aesthetic, I just wanted better light for the interview. I found a side gym, and opened a door leading outside to let in natural light. I had him stand just outside the direct light from the sun, letting the ambient light bouncing up from the floor fill his face. All during the interview, I couldn't help but think how amazing the lighting was: the blue of the outside, complimented by the warm glow bouncing up from the wooden floor. After the interview, I told him, 'Can I ask one last thing? The light is just too perfect not to take a portrait. Can we do a couple shots before we return to the powwow?' I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
