Local Ugandan children warily watch tourists with hiking poles and cameras on their treks to see endangered mountain gorillas. Fortunately for this Buhoma community, tourism income provides food and schooling. Fortunately for all downstream Ugandan, Sudanese and Egyptian communities, tourism has saved the Bwindi Forest – a critical headwater source of the White Nile. . The photograph was taken on a documentary expedition for No Water No Life to the Nile River Basin to study the watershed’s ecosystems, threats to quality, availability and usage of its water supply and management of this precious natural resource.

Biography: Alison M. Jones is a conservation photographer who has documented sub-Sahara Africa since 1985. Seeing that rivers and lakeshores are the continent's ribbons of life, she founded NO WATER NO LIFE. This nonprofit combines photography and science to publicize the vulnerability of the planet's freshwater resources. Her work is seen in magazines, books, TV and is used in her workshops, lectures and exhibits.
