Title: Element 01 The Namib desert in Africa is said to be the oldest desert on earth. This image is the first element in a four part series of the strongest elements that have shaped our planet as individuals, water, fire, deserts, and ice but also, how they share an over-powering connection between them. Our environment and climate dictates how we adapt, how we grow food and how we live – we are at the mercy of what that element dictates, not only as individuals, but also as communities, and as a global society.

Our environment and climate dictates how we adapt, how we grow food and how we live – we are at the mercy of what that element dictates, not only as individuals, but also as communities, and as a global society.

Title: Lilies of the Pond Simplicity in nature is so powerful. I was shooting the fall colors in Acadia National Park, Maine, and wanted something special. On a hike the previous day, I noticed this delicate composition of reeds and lilies in a shallow pond, but was unable to shoot as the wind was strong. I hiked back in, and the stillness of the late afternoon had completely transformed the shot. The reeds reflected perfectly, and the multi-colored lilies added a special element to their tranquil moment. The silence of the day was broken only by my shutter. This image captured my feelings of our delicate, fragile planet in a simplistic abstract.

Title: Pele's Whisper The feeling I had on this early morning is hard to describe. As I hiked out under moonlight over the smoldering crunchy lava, an eerie electricity filled the air and I couldn’t help but think that something momentous was in store. It wasn’t until much later that I realized what may have been responsible for that feeling. A mate of mine informed me of the story of Pele, the Goddess of Fire in Hawai’ian folklore. A volatile and, at times, vindictive goddess, Pele took pleasure in her power to both destroy the land and also create it. Legend has it that she and her sister Namaka-o-kaha’l, Goddess of Water and Sea, constantly sabotaged each other causing Pele to move down the island chain before finally claiming the Mauna Loa mountain on The Big Island. You can visualize her fair profile in the upper left–it’s as if she is blowing, or whispering, into the ocean causing the steam to part on the surface of the water below. I get chills every time I look at it. It’s my shot of a lifetime.

Title: Pristine These pristine waterfalls have to be one of the most amazing places on the planet. The mossy garden in the foreground and the huge logs perfectly framed this shot. Volcanic activity from millions of years ago had formed the perfect terrace for the water to flow down and the long exposure helped capture softness and the serenity of the area. Heavy snowfall the previous night opened nature’s flood gates, allowing me to set up my tripod in a virtual cloud of mist. Just looking at this shot takes me back to the area, and I can almost feel my lungs filling with the fresh mist.
